La source d'inspiration de Ludovico Einaudi pour son œuvre -I Giorni-, fut une chanson malienne du XIIème siècle, au sujet d'un hippopotame qui était chéri par les habitants du village voisin mais qui fut tué par un chasseur. -La chanson-, écrit Einaudi dans son journal de bord, -est chantée comme si ce fut une lamentation pour la mort d'un roi, une personne importante ou pour la perte d'un être aimé-. Le résultat est une tendre et introspective série de 14 morceaux de piano. Cette œuvre fut écrite après avoir entendu l'interprétation du Kora de Toumani Diabete lors d'un voyage au Mali.
