Sheet music for 2 flutes and alto flute
End of Cycle II
Beyond the anecdotes related to the life of each of these three composers, let us look more closely at the links that Ludwig van Beethoven, by far the most emblematic of the three, with the other two, has been able to maintain throughout his life. . Parenting relationship with Haydn, who was once his prefessor, and paternity with Kuhlau, who never concealed his admiration for the Bonn master and whose compositions have rightly earned him the title of "Beethoven of the flute, "though he himself was never a flutist!
In Haydn's London Trios as well as in Beethoven's Grand Trio, the use of the alto flute in third voice seems particularly relevant to us. Indeed, both of these two trios are written for two identical instruments and a third different (two flutes & cello for Haydn, two flutes & English horn for Beethoven). The characteristic timbre of the alto flute, which is definitely not the same as that of the great flute, seemed to us to echo the original orchestrations.
