Original contemporary work for oboe, clarinet in B or A and bassoon
Reed Trios - Chamber Music
Total duration: 10 min 15 s
Fernande Decruck composed seven reed trios. His predilection for this formation surely went hand in hand with his friendship with the bassoon player Fernand Oubradous, one of the founding members of the Trio d 'Anches de Paris. The Sonata (the 2nd) by Decruck for the reed trio was composed in September 1945. The first version contained a fourth movement, and was dedicated to the René Daraux Reed Trio, composed of René Daraux, oboe, Fernand Gossens, on clarinet, Ange Maugendre on bassoon. For reasons which remain unexplained, Decruck revised the trio by cutting the fourth movement and addressing the dedication to Paul Siguier, Maurice Coëx and Simon Colette. She recorded the work at SACEM in 1949. The manuscript bearing the scribbled note “Siguier Radio Limoges,” we can assume that the work was broadcast on Limoges radio. The Sonata is in three movements. The first movement begins with a floating and sensual entry, with a warm harmony inspired by jazz. This short entry is followed by a 6/8 Allegro part. The second movement, noted Andante Amabile, echoes the slow entry of the first movement. The last movement is a playful and lively scherzo. On the whole, this trio alone concentrates all the facets of the composer in a sonic jewel of ten minutes. This reed sonata was recorded in 2017 by the female trio Reeds Amis, with Marilyn Cole on oboe, Angela Shankar on clarinet and Mélissa Kritzer on bassoon straight from New York, USA.The original manuscript was in C, with a B flat clarinet. However, for this modern edition, we have chosen to give the choice between clarinet in B flat and clarinet in A. The clarinetist should find his playing easier.
